Oxford ELLT Spotlight Test Officially Endorsed by NEAS

We’re pleased to share that the Oxford ELLT Spotlight Test has been officially endorsed by NEAS (National ELT Accreditation Scheme), following a detailed quality review process.

NEAS is an internationally recognised body that evaluates English language education tools, looking at how they’re developed, delivered, and maintained, with a focus on quality, fairness, and relevance for learners and the wider sector.

Assessment Built on Research and Rigour

The Spotlight Test is an online English language placement test designed to help students identify and demonstrate their current level of English. It assesses six core skills: Reading, Listening, Grammar, Vocabulary, Speaking, and Writing, and can be completed fully online, at a time that suits the test taker.

The test is structured around the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) — a widely used international standard for describing language ability, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (advanced)

Built for flexibility and accessibility, Oxford ELLT Spotlight also offers optional modules for those who require deeper feedback on productive skills such as writing or speaking.

Our Approach to Quality and Continuous Improvement

The NEAS endorsement process focuses on how a test is designed and delivered, but also how it’s kept up to date and whether it reflects the needs of learners and educators.

In their review of Spotlight, NEAS highlighted the following areas:

  • A clear and structured approach to assessment, with standardised rubrics and scoring
  • Use of learner-friendly features, such as asynchronous speaking and visual prompts
  • An ongoing quality review process, informed by feedback from students, teachers, and academic partners
  • A focus on accessibility and affordability, ensuring more learners can access reliable testing
  • Alignment with international standards like CEFR, supporting consistent interpretation of results

The test was developed following international consultation with partners in the UK, US, and Canada, and is already used in a range of higher education contexts.

“We’re pleased to receive this recognition from NEAS, which reflects the care and collaboration that’s gone into shaping the Spotlight Test,” said Tom Dawtrey, Director of Operations and Partnerships at Oxford International Digital Institute.

“From the beginning, our goal has been to design a test that works for learners and institutions alike — something academically rigorous, flexible, and genuinely accessible. This endorsement strengthens our commitment to delivering high-quality digital assessment tools that support students’ progress around the world.”

The Oxford ELLT Spotlight Test is now listed on the NEAS website as an endorsed product. It will also appear in the upcoming edition of NEAS News, which shares updates and developments across the English language education sector.
